Job Summary:

The Associate Therapist will provide individual, couples, and group psychotherapy using evidence-based and creative modalities. The position emphasizes high-quality, affirming clinical care while supporting the associate in accruing supervised experience toward California licensure and expanding their clinical repertoire.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Build and maintain a caseload averaging 20+ scheduled clinical therapy hours per week.

  • Because client frequency varies (for example, some clients attend biweekly, cancel occasionally, or pause treatment), the total number of active clients will typically exceed the number of weekly sessions.

• Conduct consultation calls with prospective clients and support appropriate client-practice matching.

• Commit to one evening and one weekend time block each week, providing a minimum of three clinical hours in each block for direct services.

• Provide individual, couples, and/or group psychotherapy consistent with the associate’s education, training, competence, registration category, and scope of practice.

• Complete clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, risk assessment, referrals, care coordination, and other clinical responsibilities within scope and under supervision.

• Efficiently complete administrative responsibilities associated with client care.

• Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in the electronic health record (EHR), including intake documentation, treatment plans, progress notes, discharge documentation, and collateral contacts.

• Participate consistently in required individual supervision, case consultation, training, and team meetings.

• Consult promptly with the clinical supervisor regarding risk, ethical concerns, scope-of-practice questions, clinical uncertainty, and situations requiring a higher level of care.

• Comply with HIPAA, mandated reporting obligations, applicable ethical standards, practice policies, and California Board of Behavioral Sciences requirements.

• Contribute to a supportive and collaborative team culture.

Required Skills and Abilities:

• Proficiency or strong interest in evidence-based and experiential modalities, such as DBT, ACT, EMDR, and drama therapy.

• Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, case conceptualization, and treatment-planning skills appropriate to the associate’s training level.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, warmth, and empathy to build strong therapeutic relationships.

• Ability to combine validation and relational depth with structure, goals, boundaries, and clear clinical direction.

• Sound clinical judgment, including risk assessment, consultation, documentation, and recognition of when a client may need a higher level of care.

• Familiarity with HIPAA compliance, mandated reporting, professional ethics, and culturally responsive care.

• Effective time management and organizational skills to balance a growing caseload, documentation, supervision, and administrative responsibilities.

• Responsiveness, transparency, openness to feedback, and willingness to ask for help when needed.

Education and Experience:

• Completion of a qualifying master’s degree in marriage and family therapy, clinical social work, professional clinical counseling, or a related license-eligible discipline.

• Current, active California registration in good standing as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT), Associate Clinical Social Worker (ASW), or Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC) by the employment start date.

• Eligibility to perform services and accrue supervised experience toward California licensure under the requirements applicable to the associate’s registration category. These categories include Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT), Associate Clinical Social Worker (ASW), and Associate Professional Clinical Counselor (APCC).

Compensation and Benefits:

• Employment Classification: This is a W-2, non-exempt employee position. Compensation practices are intended to comply with applicable California wage-and-hour requirements.

• Clinical Service Compensation: Compensation is structured around the clinical services provided. The clinician receives a 40/60 clinician/practice split based on therapy session rates ranging from $150-$250 per session. The split may increase when certain revenue goals are achieved.

• Required Nonclinical Work: Required supervision, meetings, training, documentation, and other compensable work will be tracked and paid in accordance with applicable law and practice policy.

• Consultation and Training: Weekly one-on-one supervision and ongoing opportunities for case consultation, collaboration, and advanced training to support continued clinical growth.

• Flexible Schedule: Clinicians can arrange their schedules within practice, client demand, supervision, and caseload requirements.

• This is a primarily in-person role based in Pasadena, California, with telehealth services offered when clinically appropriate and permitted.

• To support client demand, clinicians provide evening and weekend availability as described above.

• Licensure Experience: Opportunity to accrue supervised professional experience toward LMFT, LCSW, or LPCC licensure, subject to the associate’s registration category and current California Board of Behavioral Sciences requirements.

• Entrepreneurial Support: Training in private-practice fundamentals, including referral development, marketing strategies, SEO, and website development.

California Board of Behavioral Sciences Experience and Supervision:

Associates will receive supervision and opportunities to accrue experience in alignment with the California Board of Behavioral Science (BBS) requirements applicable to their registration category. The practice will maintain required supervision documentation and provide experience verification consistent with applicable law and Board requirements.

The associate is responsible for maintaining an active registration in good standing, completing required renewal and examination obligations, accurately tracking experience and supervision, promptly providing required forms, and confirming that their activities meet the requirements for licensure. Because licensure rules differ among AMFT, ASW, and APCC registrants, only experience that satisfies the applicable Board requirements will count toward licensure.
