Support starts with a simple conversation.

How Psychological Evaluations Can Help

Psychological evaluations provide you with information about yourself. More specifically, neuropsychological testing offers valuable insights into your strengths and areas for growth across a variety of domains, including cognition, executive functioning, memory, emotions, and personality traits.

Evaluations also provide clarity and guidance. A comprehensive psychological assessment not only helps you learn how to best navigate mental health challenges, major life changes, issues in relationships, or cognitive concerns but also gives you specific recommendations around what can be most helpful to you.

As psychologists in Pasadena, we have worked with hundreds of clients who have expressed that participating in a psychological evaluation offered a framework for moving forward with insight.

Adults Can Benefit from Testing

Insight

An evaluation will help you understand yourself more fully, including how you think, feel, process information, and respond to stress. Struggling to identify what is really going on? Assessment can differentiate between diagnoses like anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, autism, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and ADHD.

Direction

At the end of your testing process, you will receive a comprehensive report that provides you with “next steps.” These recommendations may include suggestions for future treatment, specific strategies to help you navigate the challenges you are experiencing, referrals, and resources tailored to your strengths and challenges.

Agency

Psychological evaluations can give you agency by helping you better understand your brain and behavior, allowing you to advocate for your needs with clarity and confidence. With this insight, you can access appropriate accommodations that support your success in work, school, and daily life. You will have the confidence (and data) to ask for what you need.

Tailored Treatment Planning Based on Psychological Testing

Oftentimes, we try many different strategies to support our mental health, and it can feel like we are in an endless cycle of trial and error, trying one technique after the next without the results we are looking for.

One of the greatest benefits of a psychological evaluation is that it provides you with direction. Our reports include clear, actionable treatment recommendations tailored to your needs, strengths, and goals. These recommendations are evidence-based, enabling you to transition from guessing how to help yourself to making informed decisions tailored to your unique needs.

The structured plan that the assessment provides can help reduce uncertainty, increase confidence, and lay the groundwork for lasting change.

Are you ready to take the first step toward your tailored treatment plan?

What to Look for in Quality Psychological Testing and Evaluations

Not all evaluations are created equal. A high-quality psychological evaluation will provide you with clarity, validation, and a practical roadmap for healing and growth.

We know that psychological evaluations are a significant financial and time commitment, so choosing your evaluator for psychological assessment is a big deal!

Here are some of our recommendations around what to look for when determining who you will complete your adult psychological assessment:

Culturally-Aware, Individualized Care

Effective psychological evaluations are tailored to your background, experiences, and culture.

Look for providers who approach the assessment process from a comprehensive lens and who prioritize cultural humility. In others, you want to choose to work with an assessor who considers you as a whole person, not just test scores alone.

Comprehensive Assessment Tools

Strong evaluations use a mix of interviews, self-report questionnaires, and standardized psychological tests.

Collaborative Interpretation

You deserve to understand what your assessment results mean. Ensure that your assessor will offer you a feedback session where they can walk you through the findings, offer space for questions, and help you connect the dots between your lived experience and your evaluation results.

Actionable Recommendations

We believe that one of the most valuable components of a psychological evaluation for adults is the recommendations, which serve as a guidebook for what comes afterward. You want to ensure that you work with an assessor who will offer practical, tailored recommendations for next steps and will detail suggested accommodations (if relevant).

Neuropsychological Assessment: Our Process

Beginning a psychological evaluation is a big step. The testing process is time-intensive, expensive, and requires you to put yourself out there - this is not an easy task!

The good news is that we designed our assessment experience from scratch with a primary goal: to develop a supportive, thorough, and transparent process that will answer your questions.

Check out our Seven-Step Process.

  • 1. Initial Consultation

We start with a conversation to understand your concerns, answer your questions, and ensure the evaluation aligns with your goals. This step helps set expectations for what comes after the assessment.

  • 2. Paperwork & Intake Forms

You will complete digital forms that will provide you with additional information about the assessment process. Additionally, you will complete an intake interview that will help us gather important background information, including your medical and psychological history.

  • 3. Clinical Interview

We then schedule a one-on-one interview to explore your lived experiences more thoroughly. This conversation allows us to better understand your symptoms, history, and strengths.

  • 4. At-Home Component for Adult Psychological Testing

You will complete self-report questionnaires from the comfort of your home. These tools allow you to reflect in your own space and help our team gather additional insights into your emotional, behavioral, or cognitive patterns.

  • 5. Integrative Approach

At Thrive and Feel Psychology, we take a collaborative approach to the assessment process in order to provide accurate and thorough results. On some occasions, we will request your consent to consult with your healthcare providers, family members, or close friends to best understand the whole picture. The process of incorporating other perspectives is designed to ensure that we are providing clinically accurate and contextually informed psychological testing. Please note that we will not reach out to individuals in your life without your permission. While integrating information from other people in your life can create a more comprehensive assessment, you are ultimately in charge of your personal information and have full agency to determine who to involve in your process.

  • 6. In-Office (or Virtual) Testing Session

The formal assessment session, which we playfully call “Testing Day,” includes standardized tasks tailored to the questions we are trying to answer for you. The measures we administer may evaluate your mood, memory, attention, learning capacity, or personality features. The length of Testing Day will depend on the type of evaluation you are doing; however, you can expect to be with your assessor for a minimum of four hours on this day. We conduct Testing Day either in person or virtually, depending on the specifics of your assessment.

  • 7. Feedback Session and Report

After collecting all the data from the assessment, your team gets down to business. We score the measures, analyze the data, and interpret the findings. We use this information to answer the questions you have about yourself and provide relevant, evidence-based recommendations that will best support you in meeting your future goals. At this time, we also determine what accommodations would be most appropriate for you based on the findings from the psychological evaluation. Your team will compile all of this information into a report so that you are able to share the findings with anyone you may deem relevant, such as an HR department, a loved one, or your treatment team.   You will meet with your assessment team for a feedback session. During this time, the assessors will go over the results of your neuropsychological assessment and will provide recommendations. You will have an opportunity to ask any questions that you have.

After the feedback session, you will receive a comprehensive, straightforward report that outlines your assessment results and our personalized recommendations.

We Conduct Therapeutic Assessments

Oftentimes, a psychological assessment leads to a diagnosis; however, the diagnosis is not the goal. We are really working to help you better understand your strengths and areas of growth so that you can take the most effective steps forward.

Oftentimes, a diagnosis can be validating because it helps you feel seen. Not all assessments end in a diagnosis. At Thrive and Feel Psychology, our approach balances clinical accuracy with empathy. This comprehensive approach recognizes how trauma, stress, and life experiences shape your symptoms. Therefore, by using evidence-based assessment tools and clinical interviews, we can identify (or rule out) conditions such as:

  • Major Depressive Disorder

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

  • Bipolar Disorder

  • ADHD

  • Personality Disorders

  • Trauma- and stressor-related disorders

  • Psychotic Spectrum Disorders

FAQs About Adult Psychological Assessments

  • The pricing of your evaluation will vary based on the questions you are hoping to answer.

Prior to beginning the assessment, you will have a consultation with an assessor to determine what type of assessment is needed. Your assessor will confirm the fixed price of the evaluation after they have determined the scope of the assessment based on your needs.

    Generally, pricing is as follows:

    • Comprehensive Evaluation: $4,500

    • Comprehensive + Autism: $5,200

    • Comprehensive + ADHD: $5,000

    • Comprehensive + Autism + ADHD = $5,500

    • Comprehensive + Autism + ADHD + Psychosis = $6000

    • Vocational Assessment Add On = $800

    • Autism Evaluation: $2,100

    • ADHD Evaluation: $2,800

We recognize that pursuing a psychological or neuropsychological evaluation is a significant financial commitment.

The pricing is based on the cost of the tests we administer and the time required to complete an evaluation. We will conduct thorough clinical interviews, administer and score standardized tests, and integrate information from your records or other individuals in your life (with your permission). We will then consult with one another to develop a thoughtful interpretation and appropriate recommendations. A report will be written, and a comprehensive feedback session will be provided. Our goal is to provide you with meaningful, individualized answers that support long-term growth and clarity. We approach each evaluation with the care and depth it deserves.

Please note that we can provide a detailed superbill to you, which may decrease the overall amount that you pay if your insurance carrier provides reimbursement for out-of-network services.

  • The evaluation process, from intake until you receive your report, is usually completed with 2-3 appointments over the course of 4 to 6 weeks.

All evaluation types typically involve at least 5 hours of direct one-on-one time with your assessment team. This includes the intake interview, test administration, and feedback session. Depending on the complexity of the evaluation, some assessments may require over 10 hours of direct contact.

  • We are not in-network with any insurance companies for psychological or neuropsychological evaluations. However, we are happy to provide a detailed superbill upon request. A superbill is a receipt that includes all the necessary information (diagnosis codes, CPT codes, provider information, and service dates) that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

How do I find out if I have out-of-network coverage for psychological assessment?

Before beginning an assessment, it is important to consult with your insurance carrier to determine what your plan might cover if you participate in psychological testing with Thrive and Feel. Please note that our assessors are out-of-network providers, meaning that we are not in-network with any insurance plan.

For details on exactly what your insurance might reimburse, please follow the instructions below.

    1. Look at the back of your insurance card.

    2. Call the Member Services number.

      1. Follow the prompts to check eligibility and benefits. You will need:

        1. Insurance holder member ID Number.

        2. Client’s (whoever is being tested) date of birth.

        3. Client’s first and last name.

    3. Determine the following:

      1. Terms of Your Coverage

        1. Your out-of-network deductible

        2. Your out-of-pocket maximum

        3. Your coinsurance for psychological testing

        4. (optional) Your copay (often not applicable for out-of-network services)

      2. Your current balance

        1. Clarify how much you have currently met towards your out-of-network deductible and out-of-pocket maximum

    4. Check if your plan covers psychological testing. We recommend speaking with a customer service representative.

    5. During the call, refer to the following information:

      1. CPT codes: 96132, 96133, 96136, and 96137 (these are codes billed for testing services).

      2. Place of Service: Office (Code 11) or Telehealth (Code 2)

      3. Provider type is Professional.

      4. Provider NPI is 1851983498

      5. Private Practice NPI-2: 1932997319

      6. Provider Tax ID is 33-2781650

      7. Provider name is Dr. Mary Kate Roohan at Thrive and Feel Psychology, APC

      8. If you need a diagnosis code, use: F41.1

      9. Remember that Dr. Mary Kate Roohan is an out-of-network provider.

    6. Determine where you will need to send your superbill and how to do it (e.g., “The psychologist is going to give me a superbill to submit for out-of-network benefits once we finish testing. Where do I send the superbill so you [insurance] process it?”).

Following these steps will help you get a better understanding of what your insurance may cover for assessment.

  • We have good news -  adult psychological evaluations are not the the kind of test you can study for. No flashcards needed!

All you need to do is come to testing as yourself, and participate to the best of your ability. We encourage you to check in with yourself beforehand and come to your session as present, honest, and open as possible.

Prior to testing day, we recommend getting an adequate night’s sleep and making your psychological evaluation the priority of the day. A calm morning can make a big difference!

  • Psychological testing is collaborative, not necessarily prescriptive. If something does not feel accurately described, let us know. We are happy to walk you through how we arrived at the results of your assessment together, listen to your perspective, and explore why there may be a disconnect.

You are the expert of your lived experience, and we simply offer evaluations as a lens to better understand it.

  • Psychological testing can provide an official diagnosis, which is vital for ensuring that you receive the most appropriate and effective treatment. Evaluations can also uncover any other underlying issues that may not have been previously addressed. Additionally, the testing process can highlight specific patterns in your symptoms and help rule out conditions that could be affecting your mental health.
